Meet Brianna French, Underwriting Technician

Brianna French joined the Insurance Operations and Strategy team as At-Bay’s first Underwriting Technician in February 2021. In this hybrid role, she provides critical support for the Underwriting team by processing endorsements and midterm adjustments, quoting new small businesses, and taking on special projects.

Brianna has made significant contributions to the success and growth of multiple At-Bay teams, serving as a mentor to her fellow Underwriting Technicians by designing and leading the training for new hires. According to her manager, some of her standout traits include “her selflessness and never-say-die attitude.”

Here’s what Brianna shared about her background and her role at At-Bay:

1. How did you find your way into the cyber insurance industry?

My entire 10-year career has been in the insurance industry. I was a Claims Adjuster and an Associate Underwriter in traditional lines of insurance before becoming an Underwriting Technician in cyber. I actually went into cyber insurance because At-Bay provided the environment and culture I was looking for as a working parent.

Three years ago, I took some time off work when I gave birth to twins, but I never planned to be a long-term stay-at-home mom. It’s always been important to me to have my own career where I can establish myself and do my own thing, but becoming a parent meant I needed to find a role that would also allow me the flexibility to prioritize my family.

From my first interview, I could tell that At-Bay was what I was looking for. My return to work as a parent has been as seamless as it could be, even while I’ve taken on a new role and learned the new-to-me field of cyber.

2. What has surprised you the most since joining At-Bay?

I’ve been amazed by how generous people are with their time and energy.

Because I had no cyber insurance experience before At-Bay, I had to learn a lot from scratch, so I had constant questions. Everyone was — and still is — endlessly patient, always willing to spend one-on-one time to get me up to speed.

The steadfast support I’ve received since day one has allowed me to hit the ground running in my role and truly thrive in my career, which is something that not all working parents can say. I find that it’s easy to pour myself into my work when I’m receiving so much from the people around me, and I feel supported in my career growth unlike ever before. The sky is the limit!

3. How has At-Bay changed since you first joined?

My team has grown exponentially in the year and a half since I joined as At-Bay’s only Underwriting Technician. We’ve built an entire department with more than 10 Underwriting Technicians and are still expanding.

What’s exciting for me is that I’m able to evolve in my role as the company grows. I’ve been able to contribute suggestions and have actually seen some of my ideas for process improvements come to fruition. It means a lot to have my opinions and expertise validated because I’m able to genuinely contribute to the direction and future of the company, and I’ve never felt that anywhere else.

4. What’s the most fulfilling part of your workday?

Each day I ask myself, ‘How can I impact my team today?’ That’s what fulfills me most in my role — helping my teammates through the dynamic questions and situations that arise day-to-day and supporting our new hires as they onboard. 

Everyone is always willing to drop what they’re doing to help out, and there’s a lot of hands-on collaboration. I’m all about paying it forward, and the culture of care and support makes it easy to show up to work and give my all to my team every day.

5. Who is your pop-culture avatar?

Definitely Beyoncé. 

I wake up every morning and think, ‘I have the same 24 hours as Beyoncé, I need to really make this count.’ I can’t be her, but I can channel that philosophy in how I show up for myself, my work, and my kids.

We’re both twin moms, and we’re both strong, resilient people who are able to prioritize and balance all of our many responsibilities — and then come home to our kids and just be a mom at the end of every day.
