What is operational technology?
Operational technology (OT) refers to the hardware and software systems used to control and monitor industrial processes, such as manufacturing, energy production, transportation, and building automation. Unlike traditional IT systems that are primarily designed for data processing and communication, OT systems are designed to control physical processes and devices.
OT systems typically include a range of specialized devices and software, such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems, and industrial control systems (ICS). These systems are used to control and monitor a variety of industrial processes, such as production lines, power generation facilities, transportation systems, and building automation systems.
OT systems are critical to the functioning of many industries and are often responsible for ensuring the safety and reliability of critical infrastructure. As a result, they are also a prime target for cyber attacks and require robust security measures to prevent unauthorized access and control.
The convergence of OT and IT systems is becoming increasingly common, with many organizations adopting Internet of Things (IoT) technologies and connecting OT systems to enterprise networks. This trend has created new challenges for cyber security professionals, who must ensure the security of both IT and OT systems and prevent cyber attacks that could cause physical harm or disruption to critical infrastructure.
