Meet Nicole Herszkowicz, Business Intelligence Team Lead
Employee Spotlights showcase the talented employees who contribute to At-Bay work and culture
Nicole Herszkowicz joined At-Bay two and a half years ago to build the Business Intelligence (BI) branch of the Data and Research department. Composed of engineers, developers, and analysts, the BI team works to gather internal and external data and provide a full stack of data-driven BI technology.
According to her manager, Nicole’s greatest strength is her ability to manage multiple complex projects at once. She has developed state-of-the-art dashboards from scratch that have helped At-Bay establish and track key metrics while simultaneously serving as a mentor to other teams and running her own organization for women in data.
We spoke with Nicole to learn more about her passion for BI and making the data industry more accessible to women.
1. How did you end up at At-Bay?
In 2015, I got my first experience in the insurance industry when I joined the marketing team at a governmental export credit agency, which took a very traditional approach to insurance.
My next role as an Account Strategist at Google marked a significant shift in my career due to the emphasis on technology. That’s when I fell in love with data and began to move away from marketing and into data analytics and BI.
In 2020, I brought my experience in insurance and technology to At-Bay. I was excited by the opportunity to build a BI team from scratch, and I was specifically looking to contribute to a company of good people doing good work — which I’ve found here.
2. What has surprised you the most since joining At-Bay?
I’ve been surprised and impressed by how well At-Bay has adjusted to the changes brought on by the pandemic.
I think there are two reasons why the company has been so successful through unpredictable circumstances. First, At-Bay always adapts quickly. We continuously embrace the latest technology — which is why we thrive in the fast-moving field of cyber insurance — and we have also adopted a hybrid work model without sacrificing our productivity or camaraderie.
Second, we hire good people. Over the past two and a half years, we have brought on a diverse range of new employees but have managed to maintain the same positive vibe of the 13-person office I joined in January 2020.
3. What are you doing to make the data industry more accessible to women?
About three years ago, some friends and I co-founded Data Queens, an organization for women in data in Israel. The goal was to create a mentoring and networking community that would unify and empower women interested in or working in the data industry.
I was inspired to create a network where women can openly share information and resources because there wasn’t an existing space like this in the Israeli tech scene. Since founding the organization, we’ve grown to over 1,100 members representing a variety of roles and identities.
I devote a lot of my time outside work to supporting women’s career development in data professions, and I also bring this passion into my work at At-Bay. By prioritizing equitable hiring practices, we are building a strong, diverse Data and Research team with people of various genders, ages, and backgrounds.
4. What’s the most fulfilling part of your workday?
My most favorite aspect of my job is working on visualization and dashboard development. I get to decide on features that impact how a user will interact with our tools, and there’s a creative aspect to it that you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a data role.
Additionally, because BI impacts almost all parts of the business, I get to employ both my data expertise and people skills. I love that I work with team members in different countries, different time zones, and different roles every single day. My team includes engineers, developers, and product analysts, and my role exists at the intersection of these three domains. I thrive on the variety this creates in my day-to-day work.
5. What’s your favorite memory of At-Bay?
I have many fond memories of At-Bay, but a recent favorite was a half-day trip touring Tel Aviv’s street art. It was wonderful to spend time exploring and engaging with our city, and it’s always impressive to see how our team strikes the balance between taking our work seriously and having fun together!
